Rowena Wilding

Sunday, February 8th, 2015

rowena-in-officeAs I mentioned in an earlier post ‘the Charlotte Martin Decade’ has drawn to a close at Stan’s Cafe and there is a cheery new presence at mission control. We no longer have a General Manager; we have a less general Administrator and in April we will be joined by a rather more executive Producer. Continue reading “Rowena Wilding” »

Administrator and Executive Producer Wanted

Tuesday, November 4th, 2014

So it’s ‘big announcement time’. Stan’s Cafe is embarking on a radical bit of restructuring. We have decided that, in order to do all the things we want and need to do at the scale we want and need to do them, we need to increase the company’s backroom capacity. Charlotte our General Manager has been doing an amazing job for the last ten years and as that job has grown we have tried to chop bits of it off to give out to other people but the time has come to finally admit it isn’t one job but two.

As a result we are looking for an Executive Producer who will act as joint CEO alongside the Artistic Director. They will be majoring on all the high level company development work – getting commissions, gigs, audiences Etc. They will also line manage an Administrator who will be at the heart of the company running all those systems that making sure everything runs like clockwork.

There are full details of both jobs on a new temporary web page www.stanscafe.co.uk/jobs. The turnaround is tight and we are obviously very keen to get two amazing people to help power us along, so please do circulate this information to all your networks.

We’ll say a bit more about Charlotte and her contribution nearer to her leaving date but suffice to say here and now, she will always be a Stan’s Cafe legend (in a good way).

Leeds and Hull

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014

In my younger, more paranoid days, I was loath to talk about more than the very next Stan’s Cafe project for fear somehow the idea would be ‘stolen’. Then I started to realize that the more people you share your ideas with the greater the chance you have of finding someone who wants to join you playing with them. Post Deadline Post

Tuesday, March 18th, 2014

It’s a delight, the sky is blue, the sun is warm, flowers are out and our Arts Council Application has been committed to the ether. If you are in the privileged position of being one of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organizations you are only required to submit a funding application every three years, but when that time comes, as it just has, the pressure is on. Behind Behind the Scenes

Friday, February 14th, 2014

Behind the scenes at Stan’s Cafe there’s a freezing cold office and behind the freezing cold office is the toasty warm meeting room at Elias Topping where our board of directors met on Wednesday. Our board get very little public recognition but are a key part of the company. They provide us advice and support. They are a bulwark and encouragement. Officially they meet four or five times each year and legally they employ all the staff. Continue reading “Behind Behind the Scenes” »

Love Your Producer

Tuesday, September 24th, 2013

Today I was privileged to be one of the panelists at Theatre Bristol’s What’s Love Got To Do With It? event, which was a series conversations about Producers and their relationship to Artists Nick Sweeting and I were there as a double act and shared the opening slot with Jenny Sealey and Hetty Shand who talked about their collaborations on various Graeae projects and were excellent value. We’re Under Attack!

Friday, June 7th, 2013

‘Arty types’ are often not terribly into maths and statistics etc. maybe they even drifted off in their maths classes, but there are some sums that are so chilling they are impossible to doze through.

Today I attended a presentation from Arts Council England. If you wish never to sleep again please do read on by all means.

Too Efficient

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Charlotte’s just been slagged off by the VAT office. She found a message on the office answerphone asking us to call HM Revenue and Customs – never a exciting message to find. She calls them up and they berate her for paying out VAT bill TOO EARLY in December. You can’t win with the tax office, perhaps the best you can wish for is not to lose.

Briefing Document

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Remind me never to get involved in any collective letter writing again. Eight, maybe nine months ago at a small meeting it was agreed that it would be useful for City Councillors to receive a briefing document about how the arts ecology works. The thing finally got sent of a couple of weeks ago – WAY too late. Continue reading “Briefing Document” »
