Canute The King:
Text Extract
Aelthruda's Despair
[taken from Canute the King (stage version)]
Still the waves are encroaching,
but with no sign of the turning
we'll call now 'the turning'.
How did it come to rise like this?
We burn the maps of this complacent coastline,
cease to call it "jewel".
I read signs of storms in the skies,
can't check barometers falling.
Now all else is rising.
Here comes "The Turning", I pray.
Some time whilst we slept the heavens signed a pact to align behind the pull of the grey faced moon.
Now I ask, "Why is it us standing where all these lines cross?"
Now I call "The Turning" in an ancient tongue, I call for a turning.
