Children killed every year by hunger: 12,000,000

Chosen: It's too easy to forget about them. Saving the planet and saving the children share common solutions.
I'm trying to get domestic stats as well and will send them when I hear.

The Dodger's Single Season Attendence Record, set in 1982: 3,608,881

Chosen: I like baseball.

Worldwide Television Audience for the Memorial Service of Steve Irwin, 20/09/06: 300,000,000

I think this statistic needs checking as viewing figures are always a little suspect and this source isn't ideal.

Everyone who watches Eurovision is a really popular statistic and this is double that number! It could go down well in Melbourne.

Public Executions in England during the reign of Henry VIII: 80,000

Frankley Community High School Year 9's performed 'The Rice Show' in their school theatre on Friday. Unprompted a student chose to float the statistic 'Women who are murdered by their partners each week in the UK: 2' alongside 'The Population of London'. With an audience of parents wandering past this felt uneasy so we relocated it next to this 'Henry VIII' one, which somehow gave it an additional and possibly lighter twist.

People Who Have Left The Earth's Orbit: 24

I find it incredible that only 24 humans have left our orbit, and so long ago now. Surely no greater achievement (other than the 12 who landed on the moon) has been achieved by man.

Deaths due to Conflict in Darfur, Sudan since 2003: 200,000

This has just been verified as a lowest estimate for the genocide in this region. Apparently George Clooney recently made a passionate speech demanding UN intervention. A tricky one - Sudan regected a 20,000 strong UN force on the grounds that it was an attack on a sovereignty.

Women Aged Over 60 In Germany: 11,700,000

Often these age statistics are a little dull but I was amazed and stragely delighted by the news that 1 in 7 people in Germany is a woman over 60. This is due to a combination of a low birth rate and a legacy of the Second World War which has led to women significantly outnumbering men in that generation (1 in 10 Germans is a man over 60).

I regularly hear that we live in a young person's world, but maybe this is not true after all.

Staff of Ryan Airlines who built the Spirit of St. Louis in 60 days: 51

This statistic was inspired by Jake's submission I did a bit of research and found this. I like it because it's Ryan Airlines (not the Ryanair we all know and love of course) but a nice name game anyway. Ryan Airlines also ran what is thought to be the first regular year round air passenger service. It started flying between L.A. and San Diego in 1925.

People watching the first solo transatlantic flight touch down, Le Bourget Airport, Paris, 21/05/1927 : 100,000

More french crowds showing the love for pioneering americans! Apparently Charles Lindbergh was only 25 when he made his flight on 'The Spirit of St. Louis".

Thomas Edison and Members of the French Society of Engineers attending a diner on the first level of the Eiffel Tower in his honour in 1889: 75

Ok, so it's a very obscure one but just found this and thought it might be of interest for you in the US. I enjoy imagining those large groups of thinkers/philosophers/artists all congratulating each other on their marvellous work and then having a good old party! Hard to think of the last American who was honoured in the same way.

USAAF servicemen stationed in Norfolk, UK 1942-45: 70,000

Here's a link-up between our two concurrent rice shows. The 2nd Air Division was based in Norfolk and B-24 'Liberator' bombers left here for their sorties to Germany. The most celebrated individual here was actor James Stewart, who was given the role of 'Group Executive Officer'; grounded, perhaps, for fear of the disastrous morale-kicking consequences of him failing to return home. 6,700 airmen were killed on raids.
Did you know there are Norwich's in Connecticut, Vermont, New York State and Michigan ?

World's Longest Human Chain: 2,000,000 People

It is easy to find depressing statistics. I love this one as it is both big and happy.

In August 1989 two million people joined hands across Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia as part of a campaign
for independence from the Soviet Union. By March 1990 Lithuania had independence. Both Latvia and Estonia
followed in August 1991.
