Today a woman took over as chief executive of one of the UK's 100 largest public limited companies, at a stroke doubling female representation at this level.

Liberace: 1

Gidoen James nominated the number of tracks on Liberace's Greatest Hits, Volume 2, but as this statistic isn't measured in people we can't use it. Not wanting to disappoint Gidoen, why don't we just have the man himself.

Artists Involved In The Time Based Arts Festival (TBA), Portland Oregon: 300

Portland Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA)'s TBA Festival, is the only one of its kind in the USA, was started in 2003 and in four years has become a stunniuing success attracting people from the US, Europe, and Asia. The audience for this year's festival was 21,000 who experienced art on stages, screens, in galleries, warehouses, colleges and the streets of Portland.

People Killed In The UK As A Result Of Trying To Shake Free Crisp Packets From Vending Machines, Since 1978: 37

I came across this whilst researching the show in Norwich. It seems so absurd and so random. Why since 1978? Were there particular developments in vending machine technology? And have these casualties had any impact on subsequent designs for the patented 'crisp release mechanism'. Beware, readers of this!

Professional Story Tellers In The UK: 420

Not liars or novelists but Story Tellers. This isn't one I researched, just one I heard whilst listening to the radio.

Employees Of The World Bank: 10,000

Thinking about the UN in turn got me thinking about The World Bank which was established in the same year.
I started looking to see how many Bank Presidents there have been (10) but ended up being more surprised to learn that it had 10,000 employees, which was many more than I expected.

Secretaries General Of The United Nations (Ever): 7

Ban Ki-moon from The Republic Of Korea (South Korea) has recently been appointed the next Secretary General (he takes up post on 1st January 2007). It's difficult to work out how important 'The World's Top Diplomat' is but I'm interested by the fact that the post is voted for by the whole world (almost & kind of).

For the record they are/have been:
Trygve Lie (Norway), Dag Hammarskjöld (Sweden), U Thant (Myanmar), Kurt Waldheim (Austria), Javier Perez de Cuellar (Peru), Boutros Boutros-Ghali (India), Kofi Annan (Ghana).

Japanese Children Provoked To Seizures By An Episode Of Pokemon, 1997: 700

It's almost a Manga image, kid's going into seizure in front of the television. A Pacific Rim stat, though I don't know what you could put it next to.

People Who Could Be Fed With Grain Consumed By Livestock In The U.S., 1997: 800,000,000

Your show got me thinking about grain and who needs it. I saw the previous stat about 12 million dead children a year by hunger. Maybe we have a way. Is there a will?

Employees of Airbus: 90,000

Business sections of newspapers rarely carry news about employees, they seem more interested in shareholders. Occasionally, of course, redundancies are on the cards, then the number of employees a firm has are mentioned. I was shocked at how large this figure is. It is further evidence of how vast the aircraft industry is and how acute our climate change callenge is – not least because I was reading this paper whilst flying home from Leipzig.
