Teenage Smokers In China: 50,000,000

Chosen: China stats are always huge, this one is no exception.

Number of people killed in Railway Accidents in Great Britain, 1893: 1011 (in 2003 it was 73)

Chosen: Whilst researching the tragic death of his great grandfather, an engine driver, Griff Rhys Jones stumbled across this stat from a time of unregulated industrial expansion. It's worth comparing to the more recent figure. (It later emerges that Griff's relative is killed after a drunken street brawl, but that there was a family cover-up)

PEOPLE KILLED IN LANDMINE EXPLOSIONS, VIETNAM, 2005: 35

Chosen: The legacy of war in peacetime is an powerful thought.

People On The UK Sex Offenders Register: 30,000

Chosen: Because it is one of those very provocative statistics that throws up lots of questions and emotion. It is challenging to think where it would be used in the show.

Inmates at Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Centre, Phillipines, performing Michael Jacksons 'Thriller' Dance: 1500

Chosen: I'm known for the doom and gloom stats so this one's a tonic and a good filler in our prison stats or the moonwalk favourite. The first stat to come from You Tube? The evidence is there on tape...

Source: YouTube (setting a dangerous precedent).

Competitors in The World Beard and Moustache Championships, Brighton, 1 Sept 2007: 250

Chosen: I've always enjoyed the old Berlin statistic, I felt I needed to ensure we had this update. Particularly as 2 spectacularly bearded hillbilly farmers and a bloke dressed as W.G. Grace walked past our flat last night.
