Pieces For The Radio
Stan's Cafe was always envisaged as a vehicle for the production of exciting new art works. Whilst touring theatre has been the company's prime concern, we have never been slow to follow up opportunities in other areas where it has looked like fun. The company has had a long standing love affair with radio and we have now produced two CDs - Pieces for the Radio Volumes One and Two.
pieces for the radio, volume one
Bleak Heart Driver (1995): Takes an idea of phasing text, inspired by the early recordings of Steve Reich and deployed in Voodoo City, and sets the result in a musical landscape.
Stenorette 2000 (man) (1999): Sets the recording of a businessman dictating thank you letters to music by Ross Carter and Jon Ward.
Blank Retina (1998): Is half poem, half spell; the sound of a virus colonising a brain. Text by Alan Hay.
Some Questions Tell Their Own Lies (1998): Is the recording of a strange police interrogation. Inspired by Donald Barthelme's "Concerning the Bodyguard", it was also an early sketch for Good and True
Love List (2001): All the songs that have ever been in the charts whose title starts with the word Love, set to music.
You can visit Jon Ward's website Angelica's Grotto to learn more about the pieces, play around with the text of Bleak Heart Driver and generally have a peak into Jon's world.
pieces for the radio, volume two

The CDs are available for £9.00 each (incl. P.&P.) Cheques payable to Stan's Cafe should be sent to; Stan's Cafe, PO Box 10153, Birmingham B12 8XH.
