The designers of our new school will
have to be briefed on what makes a classroom good to
work in. We all chose a favourite and least favourite
classroom and considered why these were our choices.
Favourite Rooms:
“My favourite clssroom is Room 30. The reason
why I choose this room is because the room is extremely
colourful, it’s got life to it.”
“My favourite room is room 30 because it is not
too big, or not too small. So, basically it is perfect
for size. It is easy to walk around when the whole class
is in it, this is probably because of the room layout.
The lights are not too bright or too dim, they are comfortable
for the eyes.”
“The ICT Room 25 because the long desks are stuck
to the wall and then there is a round table in the middle”.
“Room 25 because when it is hot the room is cool
and it’s fun working on computers and has spinning
chairs.”
“Room 30 because it is big, you can look out of
the windows and it’s got fans”
“Room 30 because it has a good seating arrangement
and great technology”
“Room 30 because it is fun to learn there and
not dry”
“Room 25, the ICT room, because it has air conditioning
and computers and it is also set out nicely with a whiteboard”.
Least Favourite Rooms:
“The music room because it hasn’t got an
interactive board”.
“My least favourite room is room 9, because it
is really hot and stuffy in the summer. This temperature
doesn’t let me concentrate on the work that is
set.”
“The science room because the chairs are uncomfortable
and tables are rubbish. The windows are big but don’t
let air in.”
“My least favourite classroom is 9 & 20. The
reason why is because they are very plain and they have
not got any colour in them.”
“Room 6, because I have to sit on a small table
all by myself, away from my friends and it’s a
boring classroom.”
“Room 20 science because it is a boring room.”
From our discussion we concluded rooms should be a comfortable
size for the number of people expected to be working
in it. Temperature control is important. Decoration
should be bright and attractive. Chairs should be comfortable.
The school has a spectacular setting so good use should
me made of the views. Good technology is essential.
Rooms shouldn’t small and the lighting should
be easy on the eye.
Other design thoughts include:
Toilet doors need locks and secure toilet roll dispensers.
Lockers would be useful giving students a base.
Some classrooms need more shelves so books can be found
easily.
As people will continue to chew gum despite the rules
chewing gum bins should be introduced.
Maybe a metal detector could prevent knives and lighters
coming into school.
More sports equipment would be good.
All students should have laptops to take home for their
homework.
Lifts would make the building friendly to disabled students.
The canteen should serve healthier food and more that
the students choose.
A bigger main hall would allow everyone to be gathered
together.
The corridors should have more pictures and even animations
on the walls.
